 Helena Banks - Author, Poet, Public Speaker and Author of Love doesn't...

Helena Banks is a published author, actress, poet, award-winning cosmetologist and a dedicated and longstanding member of The Professional Childcare Association. She the owner of Helena’s Safe Haven for Children--an establishment that prides itself on keeping children safe from harm. Helena is a "powerful messenger" who is frequently invited to speak in Chicago, Illinois, Las Vegas, Nevada and throughout the United States.  Helena shares many of her painful but personal experiences that relate to the book, Love doesn't... Her messages hit home in the lives of the women she serves and she is in high demand.  Helena has done poetry readings at the famous Dusable Museum and in the Gathering of Utterers to honor Margaret Burrows--founder of the Dusable Museum.  She  wrote and performed her poetry in a One Woman Show at the D'Vena Theatre. She's been a guest on several radio shows (Open Book Radio, KKVV 1060 AM, KRLV 1040 AM).  She performed her poetry on Aware Talk Radio, at private functions, libraries, numerous open mike functions, Mr. G's, in Chicago, Illinois, Roberson High School and the Especially Yours Cafe. She recently performed her poetry at a Circle of My Sisters function in Las Vegas, Nevada and at an Obama Health Reform function in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Her invitations to perform in Las Vegas are remarkable because she has only been in Las Vegas for a few months.

Helena Banks was frequently invited to speak at events in Chicago, Illinois.  She's regularly engeged in ministerial speaking in churches and has even presided over funerals.  She recently gave at talk to a group of women at the Platinum Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada and has enrolled in ministry school to prepare herself to do women's prison ministry. 

Helena is a published poet in the "Splendor of Sunrise Anthology".Helena took acting lessons at Act One Studios in downtown Chicago.  She has performed in the plays, Hansel and Gretel and The Me Nobody Knows, at Kennedy King College in Chicago, Illinois.  She also performed in the many plays that she directed for children.  Helena was recently offered a movie role by Director of "A Man's Image", Carolyn Okafor, winner of a film festival award. She was approached by the famed Ron Gresham, who'd done grammy award winning projects with, Gladys Night and Boys to Men.  He also worked with R. Kelly, TLC, the Temptations to and many other well known artists. Mr. Gresham had attended Helena's poetry performance at Mr. G's in Chicago and approached her to request that she allow him to put her voice/poetry to music.   

 

 

Helena is very creative.  She has worked to help young women boost their self-esteem through uplifting motivational speaking and by beautifying themselves and their homes (teaching them how to make something out of nothing through decorating).  She has prepared many brides for their weddings (doing their hair and make-up, bridal bouguets, veils and floral arrangements). 

 

 

 

Helena is a graduate of Debbies School of Cosmotology.  She has won numerous tropies and awards from hair shows for her creativity.  She won the 1st Place Trophy for hair color and hair style from Lady Clairol. She also took a 3rd place trophy out of 83 other stylists, though she was competing against many stylsist that were much more experienced than she was.   

She participated in the Disney Approach to Business Management, People Management and Quality Services Seminar and used those skills to manage problematic people and situations at the Field Museum of Natural History as Supervisor of Visitor Services. After graduating from the Human Development Center for Childcare she created and managed Helena's Safe Haven for Children Daycare Facility for more than 10 years.  She was also one of many Supervisors at Harrah's Casino who handled problematic individuals. She has been an Emergency Medical Technician and Activity Director of Uptown Shelter Care.  She was also a private sitter for the elderly who volunteered to visit nursing homes to give gifts to the needy. 

Helena currently resides in Matteson, Illinois, with her husband, James Banks. She has been married for 20 years and is the mother of 5 children and 2 step-children.  Helena is also the grandmother and grate-grandmother of multiple children.
